General History of the Burrough Family

The earliest records found for the Burrough family are of William Burrough who was born in 1723 and lived in Bowerchalke. Since the words Burrough and Bower both mean a sheltered place it may be that the family were in Bowerchalke for many years before 1723 and took their name from the village.

The Burrough family were small farmers, basketmakers, builders and carpenters and Thomas (1) moved to Broad Chalke about 1799. They have owned or rented numerous houses and plots of land at the north east part of Broad Chalke and John Burrough, born in 1812, is known to have built two cottages near Sun Cottage.

Several marriages are recorded with members of other local families such as Golding, Gould, Morris, Witt and Arnold.

Three of four brothers in the 1800s were non-conformists and are buried in the United Reformed Church graveyard.

Abner, born in 1823, emigrated to New South Wales with his wife Elizabeth and they returned later.

Hedley, born in 1876, trained as a solicitor and worked as a manager for the YMCA in Eastbourne and Newport Mon. He returned to Broad Chalke for his retirement and kept pigs, chickens, ducks and geese at Barn Orchard.

Hedley's daughter Eve also retired to Broad Chalke and the family has retained properties to the present day.

The name Burroughs was brought to England in the great wave of migration following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Burroughs family lived in Hampshire. The name was given to settlements located near a hill, and is from the Old English beorg, which means hill. It is from one of many English settlements so named that this family take their name.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Burrough, Burgh, Borrows, Burrowes, Burroughs, Burrows, Burroughes and many more. First found in Hampshire where they were descended from Hubert de Burgh, who became Lord of the Manor of Tichfield in that county.

12/06/1839
Document of John Burrough (3) mentions brother Abner, a minor

1840-1880
Thomas (2) and William (2) leased Penny Cottage but did not live there*. It is believed that Abner worked there with William as they were both basket-makers but Abner was still a minor so presumably could not be named as a tenant

09/06/1843
Thomas (1) died

15/06/1844
Nanny died

1844
Thomas (2) owned Ivon House*

15/10/1846
Thomas (2) married Maria (1) Morris. The Church burial records show two other Marias buried in Thomas Burrough graves, one was his second wife and the other a daughter who died young.

07/06/1847
Document for purchase of land mentions Thomas (2) of North Street, presumably in Sun Cottage which he had inherited from Thomas (1), as sole purchasor of land "for the lives of Samuel Parrot and William West" but only for the term of his life for 6/8d per annum. Possibly Barn Orchard

1847-1851
Between these dates the Burrough family must have taken possession of Barn Orchard but it could have been as early as 1832

05/02/1848
William (2) married Emma Gould

1849
Lease of Phoenix Cottage changed from Thomas (2) to Abner*

1850-1869

1851
William (2) and Abner lived in Ivon House; Thomas (2) lived at Barn Orchard*

27/12/1852
Probate of Will of John Burrough mentions brother Thomas whose sons were Thomas, William and Abner. If this was John (1) who was adult in 1797 he would be at least 81 years old at this date. His brother Thomas (1) had sons Thomas (2), William (2) and Abner. Another son John (3) was still alive but not mentioned - why not? (If this is the Will of John (3) who would have been 40 years old, then his brother Thomas (2) did not have sons Thomas, William and Abner. John (2) did not have a brother Thomas. It is most likely the Will of John (1) who presumably had no children)

27/01/1853
Abner married Elizabeth Gould

20/04/1853
Abner and Elizabeth emigrated to Australia and lived in New South Wales for a time and daughter Maria Louisa was born and baptised there. Two other children died young in Australia and another after their return.

1853
William (2) owned Sun Cottage; tenanted by George Hewett*

12/03/1855
Ann born, daughter of Abner and Elizabeth, died 15/3/1855

05/10/1856
Elizabeth Kate born, daughter of Abner and Elizabeth, died 29/10/1856

23/07/1858
Maria Louisa born, daughter of Abner and Elizabeth; baptised 22/9/1858 at Ryde, New South Wales; married Frederick Witt

1859
Maria (1) née Morris died and was buried in the grave of Thomas (1) and Nanny because Thomas (2) had not yet died although Maria could not have been a wife of Thomas (1). Maria's name is carved on the back of the headstone. She was aged 58 (Source: Church burial records) which means that she was about 45 years old when she married Thomas (2) in 1846 and consequently they had no children. Thomas (2) later married Maria Thick who was 31 years younger than him and they had six children, two of whom died in infancy.

20/06/1860
Abner, Elizabeth and daughter Maria Louisa returned to Broad Chalke on 27/06/1860. Two other children died young in Australia and another was born and died after their return.

19/05/1861
John Alexander born, son of Abner and Elizabeth

1863
Julia Ellen Burrough born, daughter of Thomas (2) and Maria (2); married Alfred Hammond. Handley Hammond has information that Julia was "walking out" with Alfred but Maria (2) (C of E) did not approve of marriage to Alfred (a Plymouth Brother and member of the United Reformed Church). Religion or his perceived inadequate job in an outfitter's shop may have been the reason. She became a court dressmaker in Brighton, married someone else there but her husband died so she returned to Broad Chalke and married Alfred, probably still with the disapproval of Maria (2).
It seems that Thomas (2) married Maria née Morris (1), had no children by her, then she died in 1859, he then married Maria née Thick (2), had Julia Ellen (born 1863), Adelaide Maria (born about 1864), Nellie (born about 1866), had an son Thomas Gravett who died in infancy in 1870 and two more children Mina Kate and Hedley Gravett.
There are three Burrough graves in All Saints' Churchyard; one with Thomas (1), Nanny and Maria (1); one with Adelaide Maria aged 2 years and 8 months and Thomas Gravett aged 23 months; and another with Thomas (2), Maria (2) and Mina Kate with her infant son.

about 03/1864
Adelaide Maria Burrough, born, daughter of Thomas (2) and Maria (2)

about 1866
Cornelia Emma Burrough, (Nellie), born, daughter of Thomas (2) and Maria (2); lived at Barn Orchard, Broad Chalke

1866
Adelaide Maria died aged 2 years and 8 months; buried in a grave next to Thomas (1) because Thomas (2) had not yet died. (Source: Church burial records with surname Burrough)

1870
Thomas Gravett died aged 23 months, a child of Thomas and Maria (2), and is buried in the grave of Adelaide Maria next to Thomas (1) because Thomas (2) had not yet died. (Source: Church burial records)

08/12/1870
Will of Thomas Burrough (2) mentions two brothers John (3) and William (2), but the third brother Abner is not mentioned although still alive - why not? He had returned from New South Wales.

1871-1894
Thomas (2) leased Tank Cottage*

1872-1900
John (3) owned Phoenix Cottage; let it to Fred Witt 1885-1896*

about 1873
Mina Kate Burrough born, daughter of Thomas (2) and Maria (2); married Mr Arnold; son Harry Arnold and his wife Eve lived in British Columbia and their son Ira is still there. Handley Hammond says that information passed down to him was that Mr Arnold, a farmer, was not held in high regard

02/10/1874
John Alexander died

11/07/1876
Hedley Gravett Burrough born, son of Thomas (2) and Maria (2). (Thomas was 66 years old at this time and she would have been about 35 years old). Area manager for YMCA; lived at Eastbourne and Newport Mon.; retired to Barn Orchard, Broad Chalke

09/04/1880
Thomas (2) died. His gravestone is in the All Saints Church graveyard. The gravestone shows his wife Maria's name carved before Mina Kate even though Maria (2) died 22 years later than Mina. Possibly the gravestone, which is in excellent condition, is not Thomas's original in 1880 but dates from 1924 when Maria (2) died. The Will, dated 8/12/1870, proved 18/9/1883, mentions land rented from King's College, Cambridge, and says that he lived in North Street, Broad Chalke although another document suggests that he was living in Barn Orchard in 1851

1881
Abner owned Sun Cottage*

23/12/1892
Will of William Burrough (2); mentions brother Abner and the four children of the late Thomas (2), Julia, Cornelia, Mina and Hedley Gravett and niece Louisa Witt, but not brother John (3) who was still alive. Probate 23/12/1895, copy 7/12/1897

29/12/1894
William (2) died. His grave is in the United Reformed Church graveyard

About 1895
John (3) built two cottages near Sun Cottage*

1895
John (3) owned Ivon House; let it to Fred Witt*

05/03/1896
Abner died. His grave is in the United Reformed Church graveyard

1900
Mrs Elizabeth Burrough (Abner's widow) owned Chapel Cottage; leased to Fred Thick after 1907. She also owned Hydon House, a thatched cottage at the time next to a barn at the rear of the Chapel Cottage land*

23/04/1900
John (3) died. His grave is in the United Reformed Church graveyard

27/05/1902
Mina Kate died aged 29. She is buried with an infant son in the same grave as Thomas (2) and Maria (2). She must have died a long time before her husband so must have been buried in her father's grave

about 1906
Eveline Rose Burrough born; daughter of Hedley and Caroline Rosina Potter; worked at the Bank of England in London; retired to Barn Orchard and later Penny Cottage, Broad Chalke

1907
Abner's widow Elizabeth lived at Sun Cottage* (probably as owner as Abner had owned it earlier)

30/04/1910
Thomas Hedley Bruce Burrough born; son of Hedley and Caroline Rosina Potter; Architect in Bristol; married Helen Mary Dickson 18/10/1941

31/05/1914
Abner's widow Elizabeth died

30/07/1914
John Dennett Burrough born; son of Hedley and Caroline Rosina Potter; killed by bomb at Plymouth 21/4/1941

12/1921
Document mentions purchase of Broadchalke property, presumably Barn Orchard, for ?500 from the Provost & Scholars of King's College, Cambridge vested in the names of Mrs Burrough (Maria) and Mr Hewitt. Since Maria was already living there it must have been rented before

3/10/1924
Maria (2) née Thick died aged 83. In her Will all her estate went to her three children Julia Ellen Hammond, Cornelia Emma "Nellie" and Hedley Gravett. Mina had already died.

26/04/1940
Hedley bought Tank Cottage from Thomas and Ethel Jeans for ?40. About this time it is believed he also swapped a field called Goose Green (beyond the field opposite the entrance to Chalk Pyt House, on the hill beyond the hedge) for a 3 acre field adjacent to Barn Orchard, opposite Meadow House (Mead House) so ?40 is probably not the real value of Tank Cottage but a balancing sum

16/02/1943
John Dennett Dickson Burrough born; son of Thomas Hedley Bruce

18/11/1946
Hedley Axel Burrough born; son of Thomas Hedley Bruce

27/01/1951
Nellie died. Her grave is in the United Reformed Church graveyard

20/11/1960
Hedley Gravett died. His grave is in the United Reformed Church graveyard

27/01/1985
Eveline Rose died. Her ashes are under a memorial stone in the All Saints Church graveyard

since 1985
This branch of the Burrough family continues to own property at Broad Chalke. There is another person called Burrough in Damerham but he is not sure if he is related. Other persons called Burrough have lived in the Fovant area. There was also a John Burrough in Bowerchalke until recently but although contact with him was attempted he never replied and has probably died
